Safety - What the Auto Press Says

Though the Mark LT comes outfitted with many standard safety features, it's criticized for its limited offering of traction control and lack of side air bags and a stability control system. Nevertheless, it fares well in government crash tests.

Government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration award the 2008 Lincoln Mark LT five out of a possible five stars for both driver and passenger protection in frontal-crash tests. The Mark LT also earned a rollover rating of four out of five stars.

Accident Avoidance

Every 2008 Lincoln Mark LT comes equipped with power four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. Though traction control comes standard on the short wheelbase 4x2 Lincoln Mark LT, stability control is not available. Nevertheless, Kelley Blue Book asserts that "enhanced traction" afforded by 4x4 trims "helps to offset the truck's lack of an available stability control system."

Included in Lincoln's optional Elite Package is a reverse sensing system, which, according to MSN, "is almost a 'must' because of limited visibility when backing up."

Crash Protection

Standard on every 2008 Mark LT is Lincoln's driver and front passenger Personal Safety System -- which includes dual-stage air bags, a driver's-seat position sensor, crash severity sensor and Front-Passenger Sensing System, as well as safety belts with pretensioners, energy-management retractors and usage sensors. Other standard crash protection features include side-intrusion door beams and Lower Anchors and Tether anchors for CHildren (LATCH). "Unlike some other pickups," says Edmunds, "the vehicle lacks side airbags."
