Lotus Exige - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Lotus Exige ranks 4 out of 9 Luxury Sports Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 33 published reviews and test drives of the Lotus Exige, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Exige offers rocket-like speed on straight-aways and even better handling through curves, making it a bona fide racecar for performance junkies and earning it a top ranking. The 2008 Exige is perfect car for anyone who values true sports performance over luxury.
The Exige is a star performer on the track, unsurpassed in its speed, handling and racy looks. The 220-horsepower S model replaced the previous 190-horsepower Exige in 2007. "Certainly the Exige S isn't for everyone, but for the true enthusiast who reveres performance-oriented driving dynamics...this is as undefiled a road car that money can buy," says Automobile.com.
There's no doubt that the Exige is a winner for its race-inspired performance, but it falls short in several other key areas. Sore spots include poor fit and finish, a stiff ride, and a Spartan interior with very little utility or even room to breathe -- making the Exige almost impossible to use as a daily driver. Competitors -- including the Ferrari F430, Porsche Cayman and Chevrolet Corvette -- may provide more comfort, but they probably can't match the awe-inspiring performance of the Lotus. In addition, the Exige's exclusive, cult-like status could also allow it to enjoy high resale value.
The 2008 Exige comes in S trim only and features a supercharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission.
- "If you're not interested in track time, the Exige S is all wrong for you. Maybe you should try a 911. Or a Lucerne." -- Car and Driver
- "For those who find it a challenge to slip into a conventional sedan, don't even consider the Exige S. You're going to spend too much time driving over to your chiropractor. But if you don't mind the challenge getting in-and-out, the harsh ride and ear-splitting engine roar, Lotus's little offering is an impressive package." -- The Car Connection
- "Sure enough, if you look at the Exige or the Elise as you would any other car, DVD player or can opener, you could be appalled. But when you get your Lotus out on that perfect road and start turning the wheel, all is forgiven." -- AutoWeek
- +"[T]he best street-legal production track car you can buy." -- Road and Track
Exige Performance - 9.2 (Excellent)
The Lotus Exige is built for road-ripping speed. "Flamboyant and fun, elemental and efficient, there are few cars on the market built strictly to address the joy of driving," writes Autobytel. "The Lotus Exige S is one of those rare, purpose-built automobiles that make getting behind the wheel a thrill rather than a chore. We need more cars like this." Compared to other luxury sports cars, the 2008 Lotus Exige ranks near the top in the category of performance. Exige Exterior - 8.8 (Very Good)
The Exige is, without a doubt, a jaw-dropping head-turner. In fact, its exterior design ranks near the top of its class. According to Forbes, "The Lotus Exige is slightly smaller than a BMW Z4 Coupe, though its exterior styling is far wilder, with elongated elliptical headlamps, sweeping broad-shouldered bodylines highlighted by large side scoops, and wide air intakes on the lower fascia and at the rear fenders." Exige Interior - 5.0 (Mediocre)
The Exige's interior ranks near the bottom of its class because its cabin is cramped and difficult to enter and exit, and it has few convenience features. Still, reviewers assert that luxury and practicality aren't what the Exige were created for. "Although the Exige is difficult to get into for taller drivers, who have to put a right foot in, then turn to the left and fold in half to mail themselves into the car butt first, the contortion is worth it," writes Car and Driver. Exige Safety - NA
The Exige has yet to be crash tested by the federal government and insurance industry, and features minimal active and passive safety systems. Continue with our full Safety Review to read about the Exige's hampered rearward visibility. continue
