Exterior - What the Auto Press Says

Reflecting its sporty underpinnings, the Mazda6's exterior helps it rank in the top-five cars of a conservative segment. Automobile Magazine claims it "adopts the aggressive look of a hot-rodded import tuner car, helping distinguish it from the virtuous but staid competition."

Newsday says the Mazda6's design places "an emphasis on sportiness over comfort." A minority of reviewers finds that it goes too far. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman finds the "exterior appeal is a bit artificial, owing a lot to spoilers, cladding, and other add-ons," but nonetheless gives "Mazda points for touches such as dual chrome exhaust pipes on every model." Most reviewers, however, appreciate the aesthetic. Motor Trend likes the Mazda6's "extra bit of visual zip and balance, compared with most Japanese midsizers."

The Detroit Free Press calls the exterior "among the strongest, most assured Japanese designs in recent memory," citing the Mazda6's "husky shoulders," its "deeply creased hood and streamlined mirrors" that "recall BMW."
