The 2008 Mazda RX-8 reliability score of 8.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).
Mazda offers coverage on all of its cars, including a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Mazda also offers a standard five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The reliability of the RX-8's unconventional engine is an issue for some reviewers. Business Week says that because of the increased maintenance the RX8 requires, "you have to wonder if the rotary engine can match the long-term reliability of a conventional engine. After all, many piston engines don't even require a tune-up in the first 100,000 miles. Also, depending on where you live, it may be hard to find a mechanic experienced in servicing rotary engines." Also, they report that Consumer Reports says the RX8's reliability is worse than average.
