2008 Mercedes-Benz M Reliability Review [ 2007 ]
Based on analysis of 45 M reviews and test drives.
Reliability
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz M reliability score of 8.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).
The M-Class comes with the Mercedes limited warranty, which runs for 48 months or 50,000 miles. At any time during the new vehicle warranty coverage, buyers may also purchase a Mercedes-Benz extended limited warranty, which will provide additional protection when the new vehicle limited warranty expires. Extended warranties up to 100,000 total accrued miles are available at an extra cost.
The 2008 Mercedes M-Class is generally not considered the most reliable vehicle based on quality glitches that have plagued the Benz brand. However, reviewers stress that, as USA Today puts it, "It's so new that you could consider it unproved and therefore a quality crapshoot." According to USA Today, "Consumer Reports magazine puts the 1998-2004 M-Class in its 'used cars to avoid' list because of a troublesome history. In fact, M is a repeat offender and also goes onto the magazine's 'bad bets' list, reserved for vehicles that 'have shown several years of much-worse-than-average overall reliability.'"
