Mercury Mariner Exterior Review

Exterior - 7.7 (Good)

The 2008 Mercury Mariner retains the some of the classic lines Ford-derived SUVs have been wearing since the early 90's, but with subtle new elements and a huge, bright chrome waterfall grill that has become Mercury's signature. Edmunds says the changes "give this junior sport-ute a more aggressive curbside presence."

Like most reviewers, Car and Driver likes the freshened exterior look of the mariner, saying "the cladding of the former model has been removed, thankfully, for a cleaner look, though brightwork was added in equal measure." Many reviewers see the removal of plastic body cladding as a positive development. "The 2008 Mariner has ditched its plastic side cladding, resulting in a smoother appearance. The front and rear fascias have been treated to an edgy (as in shape, not ground-breaking) redesign, giving the Mariner a beefier appearance accented by new headlights and taillights," reports Cars.com. A moon roof, side step bars and roof rack are the only exterior options.

Exterior Trims

2008 Mercury Mariner Base

The 2008 Mercury Mariner is a five-door compact SUV. The base models includes 16-inch aluminum wheels with a 6-spoke design, privacy glass and fog lamps. V6 models include exterior "V6" badging, but are otherwise undistinguishable from four-cylinder models.

2008 Mercury Mariner Premier

The top-of-the-line Mariner Premier exterior is distinguished by 17-inch aluminum wheels with a 12-spoke design, heated mirrors and exterior badging.
