Mercury Sable

Overall Score - NA

Reviewers think the Sable is a strong but unexciting choice for a family car. They praise its spacious interior, roomy trunk and improved V-6 engine, but find the exterior bland and the transmission sluggish. If you're looking for an affordable large car, also consider the Toyota Avalon or the Chrysler 300 Series.

Mercury did more than simply swap out a nameplate when it created the 2008 Mercury Sable from the 2007 Mercury Montego. They also added a more powerful engine and optional all-wheel drive. The changes earn good reviews, but aren't enough to catapult the Sable to the top of the class. The most common complain about the Sable is that it is a bland but well-made car, without any standout features.

With gas prices spiking in 2008, we should note that the Sable scores near the top of its class in fuel economy -- an important value consideration.

IntelliChoice has not yet rated the 2008 Mercury Sable for value compared to other cars in its class.
