Reliability

The 2008 Porsche Cayman reliability score of 9.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).

The Cayman comes with a four-year/50,000 mile basic warranty. The Cayman also has a four-year/50,000 mile drivetrain warranty and a ten-year/unlimited mileage rust warranty. Porsche also offers roadside assistance for four years or 50,000 miles.

The Cayman and the Cayman S are relatively new models, and USA Today notes that reliability may be an issue. They report that in 2006, Porsche "was near the bottom in the most recent Initial Quality Study (IQS) by consultant J.D. Power and Associates. Only Volkswagen, Land Rover, Mazda and Suzuki scored worse." On the other hand, USA Today continues, "Porsche scored near the top in Power's Sales Satisfaction Index, meaning buyers were well-treated by dealers. It was second to Lexus in Power's dependability study, which measures problems after three years of ownership. It was first in Power's APEAL study, which tallies what owners like about their machines." What does all that mean to buyers? As USA Today puts it, "it means you'll enjoy the purchase, need things fixed shortly after you drive off the lot, but love the car anyway and won't have many problems as it ages."
