Saturn VUE - What the Auto Press Says

The 2008 Saturn VUE ranks 4 out of 27 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 37 published reviews and test drives of the Saturn VUE, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The VUE ranks near the top of its class because it offers one of the best combinations of style, a comfortable, interior and impressive performance.

The Saturn VUE, which has undergone a complete overhaul for 2008, is an able-driving, eye-catching SUV with a comfortable interior. This year's VUE is the result of GM's partnership with its German subsidiary, Opel, and will sell in Europe as the Opel Antara. "The redesigned Vue is a sophisticated machine with flair at an affordable price -- something even a German would consider buying," says the Detroit News. "...Starting at $21,000, the redesigned Vue's posh looks and smooth ride make this crossover feel like a real value."

The VUE comes in several trims -- the base XE, XE-V6, XR, and the performance-oriented Red Line. It also comes in a Green Line hybrid version, which is reviewed separately.

  • "Saturns have never looked or felt so good." -- Car and Driver
  • "The 2008 Saturn Vue is completely redesigned, and is such a quantum leap over the original that we're a little surprised that GM decided to keep the name. ...Forget everything you know about the Vue, from its dumpy shape to the ill-fitting plastic body panels." -- Autobytel

VUE Performance - 8.0 (Very Good)

The 2008 Saturn VUE is a nimble and responsive performer with good power when equipped with one of two optional V6 engines, although it lacks power with the base four-cylinder. Car and Driver, like many reviewers, notes, "Although few Vue drivers will likely ever flog their trucklets quite like a journalist in a hurry, it is worth noting the Vue's admirable behavior under the heavy foot of a speed tyrant." Continue with our full Performance Review to learn why a few test drivers have complaints about the six-speed automatic transmission. continue

VUE Exterior - 7.4 (Good)

With a sleeker appearance than its predecessor, the 2008 Saturn VUE is a stylish SUV. "The new generation's body goes crossover curvy, shedding its straight-laced body panels," reports the Detroit News. "It looks more car than truck, and that's a welcome change." VUE Interior - 8.0 (Very Good)

The reworked interior of the 2008 Saturn VUE is comfortable, stylish, and classy -- and an improvement on what was an already impressive cabin. "Inside, the Vue wears the classiest outfit of any Saturn," says Car and Driver. While fit and finish are high points, the most frequent criticism of the VUE's interior is that it has slightly less cargo room than its class competitors. VUE Safety - 9.7 (Excellent)
