Based on analysis of 21 xD reviews and test drives.
Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The Scion xD has not been crash tested by the federal government, and it performs moderately in insurance industry crash tests. However, it does provide a full array of safety equipment.
"Even with all the go-fast goodies, safety features have not been overlooked in the xD," as NewCars.com says. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) issues its second highest rating, "Acceptable," for the xD's ability to protect passengers in frontal offset tests. In side impact tests, IIHS gives the xD the highest rating, "Good."
The 2008 xD, earns four out of five stars for driver protection in federal government front impact crash tests, as well as four stars for front passenger protection. In side impact crashes, the xD earns five stars for both front seat and backseat occupant protection.
Accident Avoidance
To help drivers avoid an accident, the Scion xD features an anti-lock braking system. Traction Control comes standard, while Electronic Stability Control is optional.
Crash Protection
With six available air bags, auto writers consistently note that the xD is better equipped for safety than its predecessor, the Scion xA. The xD's exterior panels are designed to absorb collision impact and the cabin has reinforced cross and side members that will help distribute crash impact forces.
