Exterior - What the Auto Press Says

The New Beetle Convertible retains the classic retro styling of the hardtop model of the 1960's. MSN attests, "There is nothing on the road quite like it, and it ... will always look distinctive because no automaker will ever copy its body shape." The convertible top, according to the majority of reviews, is praised for its simplicity and fun factor.

The 2008 New Beetle Convertible comes standard with a manually-operated convertible top, but can also be fitted with Option Package 1, which adds a semi-automatic power-operated cloth top with a rear glass window defogger. Reviewers find the semi-automatic top appealing and easy to operate. Edmunds reviewers say, "Dropping the top is an easy three-step process: Grab the central header release handle and twist it to the left, push up the released top a few inches, hit the button and 13 seconds later the roof is down."

Kelley Blue Book finds the convertible to be "a year-round car. Its insulated top latches securely to the windshield post via a clever one-handed latching mechanism. Once in place, you'll be amazed at how hushed the interior becomes, even at highway speeds." Edmunds adds that the "top is lined and when raised presents a smooth and snug appearance." Consumer Guide goes on to say that while convertibles tend to "sacrifice some of the hatchback's passenger and cargo space," the New Beetle Convertible rewards its passengers with a "particularly expansive open-air feel."
