The 2008 New Beetle houses the same recognizable shape of previous classic models. Although critics find it both charming and retro-contemporary, some believe the aging design is partly to blame for its slumping sales.
Kelley Blue Book calls the "most significant aspect of the New Beetle" its "familiar and friendly shape," which mimics the "best-known automotive shape in the world, the original Beetle." "The latest New Beetle has a more streamlined look," says Edmunds finds the styling "cute yet classic," but also notes that it "isn't so new anymore." Edmunds adds that "compared to other competing models, all of which are newer in design, the New Beetle has no real advantage other than its nostalgic halo."
