Exterior - What the Auto Press Says

Overall, the exterior styling of the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg2, which got a few new tweaks for 2008, gets positive reviews. The Detroit News says it has "authoritative exterior design," and Motor Week finds the exterior "rugged and progressive." The Touareg2 has recognizably VW styling, and the exterior only hints at the SUV's off-road prowess in its large wheel wells and fender flares.

For 2008, the Touareg2 features new scalloped front headlights, new exhaust pipes, and a restyled nose.

Reviewers are particularly pleased with the rear hatch on the Touareg2. The opening is low and wide, making loading and unloading cargo easy. The glass window on the hatch can be opened independently of the door, and Auto Mall USA has discovered a feature that can help shorter people reach the glass when it's open: They can "simply raise the rear door. When they reconnect, the window clicks into the door. Rejoined with the glass, the hatch can then be closed as one unit. Tall people have it easier, of course: They simply reach up and close the glass."

A power liftgate is a new standard feature for 2008. However, Mother Proof isn't as thrilled as the other reviewers about the cargo area, noting, "A power liftgate is standard, which is great, just don't forget to shut it before you get back in the driver's seat because there's no button up front to do it. The tailgate also has no warning beep to let unsuspecting pedestrians know it's shutting."
