Safety - What the Auto Press Says
Volvo's reputation for outstanding safety features continues with the 2008 V70. Even though the wagon has not been crash tested, most have confidence in its ability to avoid accidents and protect passengers in the event of one.
Kelley Blue Book writes that Volvo boasts "one of the best safety records in the industry," while Cars.com notes, "Volvo's hallmark has been and remains safety, and the V70 is available with advanced safety features like Collision Warning with Brake Support." Other distinctive safety features include Volvo's Intelligent Driver Information System and Driver Alert Control.
Accident Avoidance
Volvo provides anti-lock brakes, daytime running lights and active Bi-Xenon headlights as standard features for all V70 models. Volvo's Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system is also provided standard for the V70, which constantly compares the car's direction with the driver's inputs and cuts engine power and brakes to individual wheels to reduce skidding in hazardous situations.
Crash Protection
The 2008 Volvo V70 has dual-stage front air bags, dual chamber side air bags and side curtain air bags. The V70 has several energy absorbing zones, and Volvo's Side Impact Protection System reinforces its body structure in case of side-impact collisions. A Whiplash Protection System is integrated into the front seats to cradle the spine and neck in the event of a rear-impact collision, and head restraints are provided for all seats. All seats are contoured to prevent occupants from sliding under or out of their seatbelts during a collision, and the V70 has a collapsible steering column.
Advanced Safety Systems
The 2008 Volvo V70 has an extensive list of advanced safety features available for drivers. The Intelligent Driver Information System is a standard feature that analyzes the driving environment and can delay events, such as an incoming phone call, to minimize driver distraction. One of Volvo's standout optional features is a Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning System, which senses when the V70 wagon crosses road markings and alerts the driver. A Distance Alert and Collision Warning and Auto Brake system "uses a light and sound to warn the driver if it senses a collision may occur with a car in front of it," according to Cars.com. "The system brakes the car if the driver doesn't heed the alert."
