New for 2009

Much is unknown about the anticipated Ford Fusion Hybrid and its platform-mate, the Mercury Milan Hybrid. Still, these brand new models are expected to have a hybrid setup similar to that of the Ford Escape. Preliminary buzz indicates a possible 2.5-liter I4 engine anticipated to make 200 horsepower.

The Fusion is also scheduled for a mid-generation refresh that includes a new front and rear fascia and three new engines, which could be present in the new hybrid's design.

What the Auto Press Says

Buzz is significant but still speculative concerning the 2009 Ford Fusion Hybrid.

Here's what the auto press had to say about the 2009 Fusion Hybrid:

  • "The Fusion hybrid will be Ford's first foray into gasoline-electric cars and will borrow powertrain engineering from the company's hybrid-SUV trio: the Ford Escape, the Mercury Mariner, and the Mazda Tribute." -- Car and Driver
  • "A base 4-cylinder Fusion sedan weighs almost 100 pounds less than a base 4-cylinder front-drive Escape. If the hybrid drive system adds about the same amount of weight to a Fusion as it does in the Escape, the Fusion hybrid should offer performance comparable to an Escape Hybrid." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Looks like the whole 2009 Fusion lineup will get a refresh starting with the hybrid. New headlights and a bolder version of the three bar grille will grace the nose while the interior gets redone as well. Under the hood the hybrid drivetrain will be based on the one in the Escape/Mariner hybrid." -- Auto Blog News
  • "This is no ordinary Ford Fusion. It's actually a prototype for the 2009 Fusion hybrid and will likely be powered by a 2.5-liter I4 HEV with a horsepower rating around 200 hp, as well as an anticipated 15-20% boost in fuel economy." -- WorldCarFans.com
