New for 2009

The Soul is a brand new car-based hatchback SUV that may replace the Kia Sportage. Its funky style and affordable price targets younger buyers. The Soul seats five in two rows and is about the same length as the Kia Rio compact, meaning it's on the small end of the compact SUV scale.

Unlike many other SUVs, the front-wheel-drive Soul will not offer all-wheel drive. It's powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. On the outside, the Soul has a boxy shape similar to the Scion xB.

What the Auto Press Says

The Soul hasn't been test driven, but the press is already talking.

Here is what they have to say about the coming 2009 Soul:

  • "Kia is taking firm aim at the youth-oriented customization market that Scion has cashed in on. If said market sees Kia as a viable competitor, we're guessing Scion could have a good old-fashioned showdown on its hands." - Motor Trend
  • "Kia's Soul Concept is an enticingly youthful crossover designed to attract young, active people to the Kia brand. It does so by showcasing the kinds of things active people want from their transportation, dressed in a modern, angular, stylish package highlighted by a wrap-around rear window, a wide track, and a sloped roofline." -- Autoweb
  • "The Soul will be aimed at a young-at-heart, fashion-conscious demographic, and Kia will offer a slew of options that aim to personalize their Soul, in a similar vein as the MINI range, with new trim and color options coming every six to 12 months." - Left Lane News

Key Details

Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes and traction control, as well as front side air bags and curtain side air bags for both rows. Interior features have not yet been confirmed, but they will most likely appeal to younger buyers and could include a good-quality sound system and MP3 capability.
