New 2009 Mitsubishi Galant Safety Review [ 2008 , 2007 ]
Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The Galant has not been government crash tested for several years. However the highly-similar 2006 Galant received five stars out of five in all government front and side impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2008 Mitsubishi Galant a "Good" rating, the highest, for performance in frontal offset tests.
Accident Avoidance
Reviewers generally agree the Galant has a good list of standard safety features, but are disappointed about the absence of Electronic Stability Control. An Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution is standard, and the Sport and Ralliart models feature Traction Control. But despite these features, reviewers are less than thrilled about the absence of stability control.
- "Mitsubishi ensures you can get a $1,500 navi system, but stability control isn't available? … Without stability control, it's 'hey, look at me' as you slip, slide away." -- Chicago Tribune
Crash Protection
The Galant features advanced dual-stage front air bags with a supplemental restraint system (SRS) and passenger occupant sensors. There are also front seat-mounted side impact air bags, front and rear crumple zones, and front and rear side curtain air bags. Safety belts feature a three-point design. Child safety locks and a trunk entrapment release system are standard in every model.
- "Child-seat LATCH anchors were very easy to access, and hooking up child safety and booster seats was a snap." -- About.com
