New For 2009

Although its still only industry speculation, the 2009 Toyota Prius is supposed to have increased fuel economy (up to 80 mpg in the city), more power (a 1.8-liter engine instead of the current 1.5) and a roomier interior.

Spy shots reveal a design similar to the lines most of us have grown to associate with hybrid, but the new model will probably feature a steeply raked windshield for a sportier-looking persona.

What the Auto Press Says:

Auto writers are reveling in hypotheses about the upcoming Prius, considering the rising gas prices. Most have positive comments concerning Toyota's efforts to make its golden hybrid even more eco-friendly, and look forward to getting their hands on one for a test drive.

Here's what the press has to say about the coming 2009 Prius:

  • "New batteries and refinements to the Hybrid Synergy drive -- maybe even a solar panel on the roof and eventually plug-in capability -- could up city economy to 80 mpg." -- Popular Mechanics
  • "The displacement of the inline-4 will grow from 1.5 liters to 1.8. ... With this extra oomph, one would expect the car's fuel economy to suffer. Nope. Amazingly, the Prius will be even more fuel-efficient than it is now." -- Road and Track
  • "We're a wee bit unimpressed at this point but we're sure the Prii fans of the world will embrace it as the next best thing since sliced bread." -- Jalopnik
  • "This new model already tops the market for production vehicles in fuel economy." -- Technoride
