Reliability
The 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan reliability score of 4.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).
The Tiguan comes with a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. As an all-new vehicle, it has no proven reliability record. Volkswagen has already recalled several of the SUVs along with the 2008 Passat and Passat Wagon "for an engine surge problem tied into the engine computer," reports Left Lane News. "In all, about 4,000 vehicles need to be inspected and repaired." When the air conditioning compressor is engaged, the electronic control module "can incorrectly spike idle speeds" -- which "can lead to vehicle acceleration and a possible crash, the NHTSA summarized on its website."
