Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 RL earns five out of five stars in both frontal- and side-impact government crash tests,  as well as five stars for its ability to prevent a rollover. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the mechanically-similar 2009 RL a "Top Safety Pick" in its class because it won the Institute's top score in both frontal- and side-impact test, and comes with standard Electronic Stability Control. The institute hasn't crashed a 2010 model.

Four-wheel antilock disc brakes with brake assist are standard, as are front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Active front head restraints, which can help prevent whiplash injuries, are now standard as well.

An optional system called Collision Mitigation Braking uses radar transmitters to sense objects near the car. When a collision is unavoidable, CMBS tries to minimize the danger of an accident by audibly warnings the driver, applying emergency braking, cinching seatbelts and priming airbags to fire.

  • "The test car came with CMBS. That is not a new radio network, but the radar system. Mounted inside the grill it detects vehicles ahead and their distance from you. If the system senses things are getting too close for comfort, it will alert the driver. Further, it will pre-tension the seat belts and apply the brakes should a collision prove to be imminent." -- MarketWatch
