Reliability

The 2010 Acura TL reliability score of 8.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).

Acura provides TL buyers with a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a six-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Roadside assistance is included for the life of the car -- something most competitors offer only for the length of the warranty.

Shoppers should note that Acura takes a different approach to standard maintenance than many other automakers. Every TL includes Acura’s Maintenance Minder system as standard equipment. Acura doesn’t schedule routine, mileage-based service appointments. Instead, the system attempts to keep track of wear and tear on the car’s various components, and notify the owner when something needs attention. An onboard computer uses factors such as weather, average trip distance and demand on the engine from stop-and-start traffic to calculate whether to recommend on oil change, tire rotation, or other maintenance procedures. Instead of scheduling a check of the timing belt at 60,000 miles, Acura relies on the TL’s Maintenance Minder to determine when the timing belt may be wearing thin.

The system has been in use on many Acura cars since late 2007. Few reviewers have much to say about it. After all, media members generally spend no more than a week with any particular car and don’t handle standard maintenance on the cars they test. However, Acura’s reputation for reliability hasn’t appreciably improved or declined since the introduction of Maintenance Minder. While it’s an unconventional approach, it may provide similar results to what you would see with a traditional maintenance schedule.
