Used Car: 2012 Acura TSX Review
The 2012 Acura TSX is one of few upscale small cars with the right blend of performance and utility to create a sedan that’s a smart choice for families.
The upscale small car class isn’t large, which means that drivers looking for a luxurious family vehicle don’t have many options. This class is known for its performance, rather than its utility. The 2012 Acura TSX, however, is one of few that offers a good balance of both, and as a result, the 2012 TSX is our Best Upscale Small Car for Families. In the TSX, parents will find great space in the front seat, a large trunk and a second row that is ideal for children. If you have teens or carpool to work, the second row may not be suitable since it is tight for adults. The TSX's good safety scores should also give parents peace of mind as they drive around town with their kids in tow.
Paired with one of the most family-oriented interiors in the class is what some test drivers consider a boring four-cylinder engine and great-performing optional V6. Parents who want the most bang for their buck may prefer the base engine. Not only is it less expensive than the V6 model, but it also has higher fuel economy ratings, which means you’ll save even more money in the long run.
The 2012 Acura TSX isn’t perfect, but reviewers find that it meshes practicality and performance well, making it a solid pick for families or anyone looking for an upscale sedan.
Other Cars to Consider
For better performance and interior controls that aren’t as confusing, take a look at the Volkswagen GTI. Thanks to its German engineering, the GTI has some of the highest performance ratings in the class, but keep in mind that it’s only available as two- and four-door hatchback models. If you don’t mind driving a hatchback, the GTI also has higher fuel economy ratings, has a roomy interior and is less expensive than the TSX, making it a sporty alternative to a traditional family vehicle.
The Acura TSX isn’t the most stylish model in the class, but reviewers think the Volvo C30 is definitely a looker thanks to its retro-inspired glass hatchback. The Volvo C30’s style, however, does come at the expense of utility. Its second row of seats is one of the most cramped in the class, and it doesn’t have much cargo space. But if you only plan to drive yourself and one other person, the C30 is a great way to travel in style.

The Special Edition model has exterior upgrades and sporty leather seats with suede and red stitching. It also has unique aluminum pedal covers. There are no significant changes to the base or V6 models for 2012.

- "When driven in a more responsible manner -- meaning day-to-day commuting and the occasional on-ramp Grand Prix, the TSX V-6 is a smooth-riding, quiet and powerful machine that's wanting for very little. Combine all that with a very cool and well-built interior (including terrific front seats), and it seems Acura has another winner on its hands. Plus, you're getting TL V-6 power without that car's polarizing styling." -- Road and Track
- "TSX is let down by a noisy 4-cylinder engine, a cramped rear seat and a daunting control scheme, especially when equipped with the available navigation system. However, Acura's entry-level car boasts excellent handling characteristics with little sacrifice in ride quality regardless of body style. The sedan's available V6 delivers a refined engine note, great power, and reasonable fuel economy. These virtues, combined with competitive pricing, make TSX a Recommended choice among premium-compact cars." -- Consumer Guide
