New for 2011

Chrysler's Chapter 11 bankruptcy documents have started auto writers buzzing over several Fiat cars that should come to the United States in the coming years. One of those, the Alfa Romeo Milano, will usher Chrysler into the premium subcompact class, along with cars like the Volkswagen GTI or Volvo C30. Similar to these models, the Alfa Romeo Milano is a hatchback, a five-door redesign of the European Alfa Romeo 147, and closely related to the smaller Alfa Romeo MiTo

There are no concrete details on the 2011 Alfa Romeo Milano's features, but auto experts predict the car will have two turbocharged engines and either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. While the 147 is available as a three-door or five-door hatchback, the U.S. Alfa Romeo Milano is expected to sell here as just the five-door model.

What the Auto Press Says

Because little is known stateside about the Alfa Romeo Milano, little has been reported. However, the automotive press is generally excited to have four new Fiat cars on U.S. soil, and anticipate how the 2011 Milano's turbocharged engines and upscale appointments will compare to the most popular upscale small cars and hatchbacks.

Here is what the press has to say about the 2011 Alfa Romeo Milano:

  • "The Milano is significant as the first Fiat group car to sport the new medium car platform. Dubbed C-Evo it's the Italians' new box of bits to underpin vehicles in the C- and D-segment. ... The C-Evo architecture ('platform' is sooo last decade) will be available in front-wheel drive and 4wd formats." -- Car
  • "Although Car magazine says the coming Alfa Romeo Milano (nee 147) is 'quite different from the Mito mini," their rendering of the car makes it look an awful lot like a Mito with two more doors. Not there's anything wrong with that, since it just means more of a good thing. Compared to its 147 predecessor, it will be longer and lower, although still relatively Golf-sized." -- Autoblog
  • "This is one very stylish hatchback, judging from leaked production-model photos circulating on the Internet. Like MiTo, the Milano is an Italian stylish blend of curves and creases, announced by a rounded nose a la Alfa's exotic 8C sports cars with sweptback headlamps and a large, triangular grille. Other design elements include bulging wheelarches, a rising side-window line, and a sculpted liftgate topped by a small spoiler." -- Consumer Guide

Key Details

There are no confirmed features on the American version of the Alfa Romeo Milano. The European model the car is based on, the 147, features leather upholstery and steering wheel radio and Bluetooth controls. According to Consumer Guide, the 2011 Alfa Romeo Milano we receive should also have leather upholstery and audio and phone connections, in addition to heated seats and a navigation system.
