Audi A4 Wagon - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Audi A4 Wagon ranks 1 out of 6 Luxury Wagons. This ranking is based on our analysis of 15 published reviews and test drives of the Audi A4 Wagon, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Critics admire the 2010 A4 Avant for its smooth powertrain and pleasing handling dynamics, as well as its attractive design and elegant interior accommodations. Best of all, its top-notch safety ratings make it a solid choice for families.

Just redesigned last year, the A4 Avant carries into the 2010 model year unchanged -- which is fine by critics, who appreciate its attractive design, luxurious accommodations, advanced safety features and everyday practicality. "This car has style worthy of the Hollywood glitterati and moves that would make Justin Timberlake step back," says Car and Driver. "Fabulous-looking, well dressed, quick on its feet, and with a damn good optional stereo."

If you're in the market for a luxury wagon, check out the BMW 3-Series. All-wheel drive is only available for the 328i xDrive trim, but test drivers report that it sets the benchmark for handling in this highly competitive class.

The 2009 Audi A4 Avant is available in three trims: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige.

  • "Not surprisingly, Audi hasn't strayed that far from the successful formula that has guided the model since its introduction in 1995: Attractive styling, good performance, the optional Quattro all-wheel-drive system and a price on par with its two leading competitors, the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class." -- Orlando Sentinel
  • "[T]hose in search of a sharp-looking compact luxury sedan or wagon with all-wheel drive, the latest technology features and a range of handling characteristics, the...Audi A4 is an excellent choice." -- Edmunds

A4-Wagon Performance - 8.8 (Very Good)

Test drivers report that the A4 Avant offers plenty of power and handles quite well. "On twisty roads, the new model is the best A4 yet in terms of handling balance," writes Edmunds. "It's sharp and communicative and fun to drive spiritedly. The vehicle's mass and slightly nose-heavy layout conspire to keep it a step behind BMW's 3 Series in terms of ultimate performance, but the A4's AWD provides added security and traction in wet weather conditions." Aiding the A4's handling is an innovative Audi Drive Select system. Read More

A4-Wagon Exterior - 8.7 (Very Good)

Redesigned in 2009, the A4 Avant's exterior leaves some auto writers stunned, while others are indifferent. None, however, find it ugly. Describing its recently sculpted body, a pleased reviewer for Car and Driver writes, "[T]he new body-side lines and steep windshield lend a sense of sculpture that becomes a sense of speed as the eye is drawn back over the silver, snug-fitting roof rails and optional panoramic sunroof to the tight rear end, which looks much like that of the A6 Avant." A4-Wagon Interior - 8.4 (Very Good)

Critics admire the A4 Avant's cabin for its large cargo hold and first-rate fit and finish. Edmunds writes, "The build quality of the new A4's cabin maintains Audi's good reputation." Still, some reviewers take issue with the A4's Multi-Media Interface (MMI) system. Read More

A4-Wagon Safety - 10.0 (Excellent)

The A4 Avant performs extraordinarily well in federal government crash tests. What's more, the highly-similar 2009 model was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Istitute for Highway Safety. This isn't surprising given its long list of standard safety features, which include Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system. Read More

A4-Wagon Reliability - NA

The 2010 A4 Avant carries a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. Audi also provides 24-hour roadside assistance for four years. Read More
