2013 Audi A8 Review
This review was written when the 2013 Audi A8 was new.
Reviewers love the 2013 Audi A8’s athletic handling ultra-posh interior. A new range of engine choices make the A8 an even better performer.
The base A8 comes with a supercharged V6 engine, which automotive journalists say is smooth and responsive. Higher trim levels add more powerful turbocharged V8 and W12 engines, and the high-performance Audi S8 offers even more power, as well as a performance-tuned suspension. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models. The EPA reports that the base Audi A8 gets 18/28 mpg city/highway, which is comparable with fuel economy ratings for the Porsche Panamera and Jaguar XJ. The 2013 A8 comes with an adaptive air suspension, and test drivers agree that it delivers a comfortable, composed ride, as well as surprisingly nimble handling. Some reviewers write that rivals like the XJ and Panamera offer better performance, while others counter that the 2013 A8 offers better driving dynamics than cars like the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
All super luxury cars are known for their opulent, high-quality interiors, but test drivers maintain that the 2013 Audi A8 has one of the nicest cabins in the class. They note that the interior’s solid build quality, as well as its selection of available wood and leather trim, adds to the premium feel. Most auto writers agree that the 2013 A8 offers comfortable and supportive front seats, as well as a spacious back seat. Extended-wheelbase A8 L models have even more space with an additional 5 inches of back-seat legroom. While a few test drivers note that the A8 has less trunk space than many cars in the class, others marvel at the A8’s high-tech interior features, which include a navigation system that can display Google Earth views and a Bose stereo system with HD and satellite radio, as well as Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity. Options and features available on higher trims include a power trunk lid, four-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors with a top and corner view camera system and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.
- "The BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class mostly place an emphasis on luxury, while the Jaguar XJ and Porsche Panamera have more sporting demeanors. Those looking for a middle ground would do well to try out the 2013 Audi A8." -- Edmunds
- "Compared with the big S-Classes and 7 Series of the world, the A8 feels lithe and more responsive -- less of a limousine and more of a sport sedan. That's to say nothing of the long-wheelbase Audi's huge amount of rear legroom." -- Motor Trend
- "Audi's approach to luxury and performance takes a decidedly subtle route, choosing to impress with substance and style rather than flash and shameless self-promotion. Nowhere is this philosophy more evident than in the 2013 Audi A8, a luxury sedan of impeccable tailoring and sophistication but with a low-key attitude." -- Kelley Blue Book
- "At $110,000, the S8 will never be everyman's German performance sedan. But this understated brute is certainly one of the quickest-and one of the best." -- Popular Mechanics (Audi S8)
