2014 Audi TT Review

Reviewers say the 2014 Audi TT has an upscale cabin and is reasonably fun to drive, but other luxury sports cars offer more agile handling, stronger engines and are more exhilarating behind the wheel.

Automotive journalists agree that the 2014 TT is an entertaining car to drive, with sufficient power from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine, though most say that a number of rival sports cars offer more power for similar money. A more potent TTS trim is available, which has the same engine, but it delivers more horsepower. Reviewers say the TT's standard dual-clutch transmission shifts smoothly and quickly. At an EPA-estimated 22/31 mpg city/highway, the Audi TT's fuel economy is comparable to that of its closest rivals. Auto journalists write that the TT delivers a good tradeoff of comfortable ride quality and composed handling, though most concede that it can't match the nimble reflexes or precise steering of rivals like the Porsche Boxster.

The Audi TT scores points with test drivers for its excellent interior materials, and they say that features like a flat-bottomed steering wheel impart a sense of sportiness to the cabin. They say the front seats are comfortable and supportive, and most agree that the coupe's small rear seats are all but completely inhospitable. Reviewers write that both body styles offer reasonably good cargo space for the class, though test drivers say the coupe's hatchback opening is better suited to carrying large or oddly shaped cargo. According to test drivers, the TT's climate controls are straightforward, though some complain that the available navigation system could be easier to use. The TT comes standard with automatic climate control, a 12-speaker Bose stereo system and Bluetooth. An iPod integration system and rear parking sensors are optional.

  • "The 2014 Audi TT is a fine choice in the personal sporty car realm thanks to its premium feel and avant-garde appearance. But you'll find that competitors in this price range offer more in the way of performance and utility." -- Edmunds
  • "Naturally, you'll want to know whether there's substance behind it all. Well, that depends on how picky you are. Fans will point to the TT's energetic turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive and nimble handling. Foes will retort that the TT's platform is closely related to that of the Volkswagen Golf, so it's 'not a real sports car' (whatever that means). We can see both sides, but there's no doubt the 2014 TT looks good enough to clinch a sale on appearance alone. Add some solid fun-to-drive points to that equation and we'd say the 2014 TT is sitting pretty despite its advancing age." -- AutoTrader
  • "Although the loss of the high-performance TT RS model may upset some enthusiasts, the TT and TTS remain competent driving machines priced well within reason for most luxury buyers." -- Kelley Blue Book

Other Sports Cars to Consider

Test drivers are impressed with the Porsche Boxster's athletic handling and powerful six-cylinder engine choices. They also like its modern cabin design and comfortable, supportive seats.

The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is similarly priced to the high-performance TTS trim, and test drivers say the Corvette delivers explosive acceleration, nimble handling and a high-quality interior. Reviewers also say the Corvette offers a useful cargo area and gets good fuel economy considering it has so much power.
