BMW 1-Series - Overview

So far, the BMW 1-Series has gotten mixed reviews. Its depiction as a shrunken 3-Series is both a pro and a con to most. On the one hand, its two engines offer one of the fastest and most powerful rides in the class, while its interior refinement is of the caliber expected from a BMW. On the other hand, the 1-Series' styling is considered awkward in a class where keeping appearances are crucial, and it still features BMW's unpopular iDrive interface. Additionally, the 1-Series has a starting price below $30,000, but options could bloat this price to nearly $50,000 -- leading many auto writers to suggest you either choose among the other upscale small cars, or splurge for the larger model 3-Series.

The BMW 1-Series is an upscale small car that was introduced in the United States as a two-door coupe in 2008. The 1-Series is a miniature version of the popular BMW 3-Series, and replaces the 3-Series as the smallest and least expensive sedan in BMW's lineup. Although the 1-Series shares many components with the 3-series, including its suspension system and powertrain, its built on its own platform. BMW's 1-Series is also sold as a convertible.
