Safety - What the Auto Press Says
To reviewers' delight, the 5-Series Wagon features a wide array of standard safety features -- including front and side airbags, as well as BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system.
In crash tests conducted by the federal government, the 5-Series wagon earns three of five stars for driver protection in front impact crashes and five stars for front-passenger protection. In side impact crashes, the 5-Series Wagon earns five stars for both front seat and backseat protection. Though the insurance industry has yet to crash test the 2010 5-Series Wagon, the highly-similar 2009 model receives a rating of "Good" (the highest possible) for front-impacts, but only a "Marginal" (the second lowest rating) in side-impacts when not equipped with additional optional side airbag protection.
- "The 5 Series' available radar-based cruise control will detect a slower-moving vehicle ahead and reduce speed accordingly. New for this year, the system will slow the car to a complete stop, enabling use in stop-and-go traffic." -- Kelley Blue Book
- "Primary among the new high-tech upgrades is an enhanced BMW Assist safety/communication system (similar to General Motors' OnStar) that offers services like collision assistance and stolen vehicle recovery." -- Forbes
- "Our tester had 'park distance control' ($700) that advised by beeps that there was an object or car anywhere in the periphery of the vehicle. Sometimes this was annoying, but it was always useful." -- The Auto Channel
