Safety - What the Auto Press Says

In government crash tests, the 5 wins only three out of five stars for protecting the driver from injury in a frontal crash. The car does earn five out of five for protecting passengers from frontal-crashes, and perfect scores in government side-impact testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the mechanically-similar 2009 edition of this car perfect scores for frontal-impact crashes, but only a score of "Marginal" in side-impacts.

The car comes standard with electronic stability control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags and front and rear side-curtain airbags. Customers can purchase rear-seat side airbags, but those are specifically not recommended for those who will install child safety seats. The 5-Series is also available with a lane departure warning system and a night vision system that helps to illuminates road dangers outside the headlights' range.

  • "The 2008 BMW 5 Series was the worst performer in new side-impact crash tests of luxury sedans by the insurance industry." -- Associated Press
  • "BMW's lane-departure-warning feature sends a vibration through the steering wheel to alert drivers if their vehicle veers from a lane of traffic when the turn signal isn't used. An interior-mounted camera on the windshield monitors lane markings." -- Cars.com
  • "Visibility is only average over the shoulder and to the rear." -- Consumer Guide
