BMW 6-Series - What the Auto Press Says

The 6-Series Coupe and Convertible are luxurious, high-status vehicles that prioritize ride comfort over sports performance.

Though competitors like the Porsche 911 offer more capable sports performance, the 2009 BMW 6-Series holds its own in terms of luxury. In fact, Forbes says it's a great choice for anyone who wants to "stand out" and is looking for a vehicle "that blends sporty dynamics and decadent luxury." However, its too-snug backseat and complicated iDrive controls detract from its appeal. Overall, the 6-Series is more about status than everyday practicality and visceral performance.

If you're in the market for a super luxury sports car that values luxury over performance, another great choice is the Jaguar XK. In fact, its nameplate screams refinement. However, if what you're seeking is a thrilling performance, it's hard to beat the Porsche 911 or Dodge Viper. Though both provide loads of raw, unadulterated power, only the 911's got the handling chops to leave performance seekers all-around satisfied.

The 6-Series is available in two body styles: 650i Coupe and 650i Convertible. Both feature a smooth 360-horsepower V8 engine.

  • "More of a luxurious cruiser than a sports coupe, the 650i does offer a great engine note, a comfortable and quiet interior, quick acceleration, and exclusivity." -- Car and Driver
  • "High-powered, high-profile and highly desirable, BMW's premium 650i Coupe makes an exclusive statement in a very exclusive realm. While a few of its styling details may be open to some rather heated debate, there's no denying that this 2+2 offers a stunning driving experience for those who can afford its price of entry." -- Kelley Blue Book

6-Series Performance - NA

Test drivers report that there's plenty of power in the BMW 6-Series, but find that it handles more like a cruiser than a sports car. "If we were spending this much on a car, we'd be thinking Porsche 911, Jaguar XK, maybe a really nice Boxster, or, if you just want to go fast, even a Corvette Z06," writes Car and Driver. "But for those looking for a cruiser more comfortable than sporty that identifies them as a person of means, the 650i will not disappoint." Read More

6-Series Exterior - NA

Critics like the 6-Series' classy exterior design. "One of the most expressively styled BMWs, the 650i maintains the long, low nose and short rear-deck treatments that have characterized other classic coupes and convertibles from this marque, but incorporates lots of aluminum and thermoplastic panels to help reduce weight," writes Kelley Blue Book. "Its laid-back windshield and sweeping roofline are smartly complemented by bold fender flares that add to the aggressive character." The 6-Series is available in both coupe and convertible body styles. Read More

6-Series Interior - NA

Auto writers appreciate the 6-Series' elegant interior finish and comfortable front seats, but find that its complex iDrive system detracts from its appeal. Edmunds writes: "BMW's iDrive control system reduces button clutter to a minimum, making for a clean dash design but confusing operation of many controls, even with this year's 'shortcut' buttons." Also, critics complain that its backseat is too cramped. Read More

The 2009 6-Series hasn't been crash tested by the federal government or insurance industry, but features loads of assuring safety equipment -- including Dynamic Stability and Traction Control. Read More
