2013 BMW 6-Series Review
This review was written when the 2013 BMW 6-Series was new.
Whether you choose a coupe, a convertible or the new Gran Coupe, reviewers love the 2013 BMW 6-Series’ pleasing performance and luxurious, functional interior.
The 2013 BMW 640i Coupe and 640i Gran Coupe come with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, and test drivers agree that it provides plenty of power. However, many are even more impressed with BMW 650i models, noting that their twin-turbocharged V8 engines bolster the driving experience with thrilling acceleration. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard in all 640i and 650i models, and reviewers write that it shifts rapidly and does an excellent job of finding the right gear. The 640i coupe gets an EPA-estimated 23/33 mpg city/highway, which is great for the class. The 640i Gran Coupe gets 20/30 mpg city/highway, which is better than what six-cylinder competitors like the Jaguar XJ and Porsche Panamera get. All 6-Series models feature an adaptive suspension system, and auto writers say that it does an excellent job of delivering a comfortable ride and athletic handling. The 6-Series also wins points for its quick, precise steering, especially when outfitted with BMW’s optional Active Steering system.
Reviewers are pleased with the 2013 BMW 6-Series’ straightforward cabin design and premium materials, though some note that competing Audi models have interiors that are more appealing. The 6-Series pleases critics with its comfortable and supportive front seats, though some write that back-seat space in the 6-Series Gran Coupe is less impressive than what other super luxury cars offer. Still, the 6-Series coupe and Gran Coupe offer an impressive amount of trunk space for the class. Test drivers note that the navigation system offers attractive 3-D graphics, and some write that the standard iDrive infotainment system is easier to use than a touch-screen display. All 2013 BMW 6-Series models come standard with parking sensors, push-button start, keyless access, dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a nine-speaker stereo and BMW’s iDrive system with a 10.2-inch display. Available features include lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, a head-up display, a side- and top-view camera system, four-zone automatic climate control, a premium sound system and satellite radio.
- "Emphasizing comfort and technology rather than the traditional ‘ultimate driving machine’ ethos, the 2013 6 Series announces BMW as a serious player in the exclusive league of personal luxury cars." -- AutoTrader
- "Our initial exposure to the 6 Gran Coupe leaves us with a positive vibe-it looks fantastic and is tastefully executed – but there are alternatives." -- Car and Driver
- "The new 640i Gran Coupe is just as sexy as its 6-Series siblings, with considerable added usefulness of proper rear seats. Comparisons and confrontations with solid rivals are inevitable, but BMW now has a strong player in the 4-door luxury coupe chess game." -- MSN Autos
- "Offering turbo-6 or turbo-V8 power driving the rear (or all four) wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission (or the M models' 7-speed DCT), they look great, go like rockets and handle at least as well as anything in this small-volume segment." -- Kelley Blue Book

The Mercedes-Benz SL550 costs a bit more than the 6-Series convertible, but it comes standard with a twin-turbo V8 engine that critics say offers a thrilling amount of power.
