Safety - What the Auto Press Says
Neither the federal government nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has published any crash test results for the redesigned 2010 BMW 7-Series. This is not unusual for either agency when it comes to super luxury cars.
The 7-Series comes equipped with passenger and driver front and side-impact airbags. BMW's unique Head Protection System, which uses tubular airbags that deploy across the windows instead of the curtain-shaped airbags most automakers use, is included. A knee airbag prevents the driver's knees from impacting the dashboard in an accident. Front seats include active head restraints, though the rear seats do not.
The 7-Series is one of the world's most technologically advanced cars. Its front collision warning system, for instance, constantly monitors the distance between the 7-Series and the car in front of it. Should the driver come to close to the car ahead, the 7-Series can flash dashboard lights and sound audible warnings to alert the driver to slow down, and even apply its own brakes to try to prevent an impact.
The 7 also offer a system that wipes the brake rotors dry when the windshield wipers are in use. A brake assist feature also automatically primes the brakes, pulling the brake pads closer to the wheels, whenever the driver releases the accelerator.
Two safety systems are optional. The Active Blind Spot Detection system uses radar to monitor the car's blind spots, and warn the driver if a car is there. The Night Vision system with Pedestrian Detection uses infrared technology to scan the area in front of the vehicle beyond headlight range, and illuminate humans or animals in the vehicle's path on the navigation screen, and if equipped, the heads-up display.
