Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The federal government gives the 2010 BMW X5 a top score of five stars for driver safety and just four stars for passenger safety in frontal crash tests. In side impact crash tests, it gets five-star scores for both front- and rear-seat safety. It also gets a four-star rollover score, which is good for the class and means it has just a 17 percent chance of rollover in a single vehicle crash. The insurance industry gives the 2010 X5 top scores of "Good" in frontal offset, side impact and rear crash protection tests.
The X5 comes with safety features befitting a luxury vehicle. These include Dynamic Stability Control (including Brake Fade Compensation, Start-off Assistant, Brake Drying, and Brake Stand-by features), Dynamic Traction Control, Hill Descent Control, Dynamic Brake Control and Dynamic Cruise Control.
A rearview camera and Park Distance Control are available with the optional Technology Package ($2,600), which also comes with a navigation system. For 2010, the rearview camera gains a top-view feature. Park Distance Control, which emits audio signals when it senses objects behind the vehicle, is also available individually for $750. A $1,200 Head-Up Display projects important information, such as current speed, onto the windshield.
- "The heavy Bimmer remained flat even when we yanked on the steering wheel at high speeds. We subsequently goosed the throttle to determine how tail-happy the X5 could be, and even with the wheel cranked, the pedal on the floor, the surface wet and the stability control off, we didn't get the rear end to twitch more than a foot or so." -- Autobytel
