Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The Impala performs admirably in crash tests and features loads of assuring safety equipment. However, at least one reviewer notes that its rear pillars could pose a safety hazard.

The '10 Impala performs well in federal government crash tests -- earning the highest possible score of five stars in front-impacts. It also earns five stars for impacts to the driver side and four stars for impacts to the side rear passenger, as well as a rollover rating of four stars. The highly-similar 2008 model earns an "Acceptable" rating (second highest possible) in frontal offset tests and a "Good" rating (the highest possible) in side impact tests conducted by the insurance industry.

Among the 2010 Impalas standard active and passive safety features are Electronic Traction Control and dual-stage front and side airbags. Standard on the 2LT, LTZ, and SS is a StabiliTrack Electronic Stability Control System.

  • "The usual raft of airbags is standard on the Impala, including full-length curtain devices and front side bags. Anti-lock brakes and traction control are standard on all models, and a stability-control system comes on models equipped with the 3.9- and 5.3-liter engines." -- Car and Driver
  • "Decent visibility is compromised slightly by thick rear pillars." -- Consumer Guide
