Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban is ranked near the top of the class for safety, based on excellent scores in government crash tests.
The Suburban earned five out of five stars for both driver and front passenger protection in frontal crashes, and five stars in front seat and backseat occupant protection in side crashes.
Accident Avoidance
Both the rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models of the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban scored three out of five on rollover tests done by the federal government, which is average for an SUV, though reviewers note that the vehicle comes with a standard stability control system to lessen the likelihood of a rollover. Forbes says, "GM's StabiliTrak stability control system is standard across the line for added on-road command; here it newly incorporates rollover mitigation technology that can deploy the vehicle's head-curtain air bags before a crash occurs if it determines a rollover is imminent"
New Car Test Drive notes that some of the enhanced driving features also make the Suburban safer than it was before. "The upgraded suspension and steering have moved the Suburban into new territory: quality ride and handling. This results in safety through accident avoidance. The new frame also increases structural safety, as the forward section with hydroformed rails improves crushability"
Crash Protection
BuyingAdvice.com says "Safety in the Suburban is good, almost by default. By virtue of its being a very large vehicle, it is much less likely to sustain much damage in an accident."
Safety improvements on last year's models, including optional side curtain air bags, impressed some reviewers though others felt that the side head-curtain airbags should be standard across all Suburban trims. Nevertheless, they praised the SUV for other safety features including anti-lock breaks, tire-pressure monitoring and standard frontal air bags. About.com sums up the consensus. "Safety has also been improved in the Suburban, with a new stiffer frame, standard Stabilitrak vehicle dynamic control, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS standard, and available roof-mounted head curtain side airbags for all three rows of seats."
