Safety - What the Auto Press Says

In federal government crash testing, the 300 receives five out of five stars for protecting driver and passenger in a frontal-impact crash, but the car hasn't been through side-impact testing.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety hasn't tested the 2010, but gave the mechanically-similar 2009 model less-than-impressive scores.  The car managed a top rating of "Good" in frontal offset testing, but did not do as well in side-impact tests.  The 300 managed a "poor" rating without side head-curtain airbags, and only a slightly better "marginal" rating with them.  For 2010, Chrysler has made the curtains standard equipment on all 300s, but that still means that every 300 earns only a "marginal" side-impact rating. Many competitors, like the Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon, earn top scores in all of the Institute's tests.

Antilock brakes, traction and stability control are also extra-cost options on the base model, though they are standard on higher trims. A few testers report visibility concerns.

  • "A tall tail and wide rear pillars reduce the driver's aft visibility. Thick front pillars interfere with the view to the corners." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Unfortunately, the 300's signature low-profile windows result in compromised visibility -- particularly for shorter drivers." -- Edmunds
