Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Avenger earns five of five stars from the federal government in frontal-impact crash testing. The government hasn't performed a side-impact test on the 2010 Avenger, but marked the mechanically-similar 2009 model with a "Safety Concern" because its door opened during side-impact testing. That raises the risk of ejection, though the dummy in the govenrment's test was not ejected and did not suffer any unusual injuries from the test.

The car does very well in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, earning the highest possible score, "Good" in both front- and side-impact testing. The Avenger was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS.

STX and R/T Avengers come with four-wheel anti-lock brakes, but antilocks are an added-cost option on SE models. Electronic and stability controls, standard now on most midsize cars, are optional on R/T and SXT models -- and not available at all on SE models. Six airbags are standard, including head curtain airbags. Reviewers consistently note rear visibility problems with the Avenger due to the large pillars between the rear windows and rear windshield.
