Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Dodge Magnum has a decent set of safety features, but most don't come standard. "There are lots of safety features," says the Detroit News, "but you'll have to pay extra for most of them." The Magnum does well in federal government crash tests.
Government crash tests give the Magnum a top rating of 5 out of 5 stars in frontal crash tests for both driver and front passenger protection, as well as 4 out of 5 stars for front seat occupant protection in side crash tests and 5 out of 5 stars for rear seat passenger protection in side crash tests. The Magnum also received 4 out of 5 stars in rollover tests for the rear-wheel drive versions. (The all-wheel drive versions have not been tested.)
Accident Avoidance
There are almost no standard accident avoidance features on the base model SE. The SXT, R/T and SRT add stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes, which are available as options on the SE. The Detroit Free Press says: "I believe Chrysler should have made antilock brakes and traction and stability control standard equipment on all models. The additional cost would have been minimal, and a modern family car with rear-wheel drive should come with traction control." However, that same reviewer likes those features when they're available. "The Magnum's traction control and electronic stability programs are among the best I've experienced, preventing wheel spin and fishtailing seamlessly."
Crash Protection
All models come standard with driver and passenger frontal air bags, child seat upper tether anchorages, rear center three-point seat belts and height-adjustable front shoulder belts. Head curtain air bags are available as an option. No side air bags are available.
