Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2008 Dodge Nitro does extremely well in federal government crash tests. In addition, almost all of the safety features on the Nitro come as standard equipment. These include anti-lock brakes, traction control and electronic stability control.

The federal government awards the 2008 Nitro 5 out of 5 stars for both driver and passenger safety in frontal crash tests. In side crash tests, it gets another 5-star rating for front and rear seat safety. The Nitro receives a 3-star rollover rating in the 2WD and 4WD versions. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety gives the Nitro a top rating of "Good" in frontal offset tests, but a much lower score of "Marginal" for side impact tests. The Nitro also gets a rating of "Poor," the lowest possible, for rear crash protection.

Accident Avoidance

Anti-lock brakes with brake assist are standard equipment on all 2008 Nitros. The Nitro also comes with an electronic stability program, all-speed traction control and Electronic Roll Mitigation (an anti-rollover system). New for 2008 is a ParkSense rear park assist system, the Nitro's only optional safety feature. It uses sound waves to detect obstacles and alerts the driver through audio-visual indicators on the overhead display.

Crash Protection

The 2008 Nitro offers next-generation air bags, which inflate at differing speeds depending on the severity of the impact, for front seat occupants. The front passenger seat also gets an occupant classification system, which de-activates the front passenger air bag if the passenger's seat is empty. Side head curtain air bags, designed to remain inflated during a rollover, are also standard.
