Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Dodge Ram does very well in government crash tests. However, reviewers are generally disappointed with the lack of standard safety features. The Detroit News comments, "In terms of safety, Dodge apparently is convinced that the key is size and not equipment."
The 2008 Regular Cab model earned a top score of five stars for driver and passenger protection in front impact crashes. It also gets a rollover rating of four stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a top rating of "Good" in frontal offset tests.
Accident Avoidance
Rear wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard on all trim levels, and four-wheel ABS is standard on the Laramie trim, optional on the others. An Electronic Stability Program that comes standard on the Laramie and is optional on all other trims.
Some reviewers find visibility in the 1500 problematic. The Arizona Republic finds rear visibility is hampered by the "6-foot-plus bed hanging out behind the long cab. Reverse radar would be appreciated." While that technology is not available on the 1500, A Car Place notes that visibility is aided by "larger than usual windows and large side rearview mirrors (our vehicle had special towing mirrors as well; these are extra-large, with mini convex mirrors in the corners, and can be manually folded in)." But still, the reviewer finds, "The sheer height of the pickup blocks off some areas, and backing up must be done with considerable caution." Again, A Car Place suggests "an optional reverse assist would be quite handy."
Crash Protection
The Ram 1500's standard passive safety equipment includes driver and passenger front air bags with multi-stage deployment and an air bag on-off switch. Side-curtain air bags are optional. Automotive.com writes, "We recommend getting them; head injuries are the leading cause of death in side impacts."
