Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The federal government gives the 2010 Explorer top five-star scores for all seating positions in both frontal and side crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a top score of "Good" in frontal offset tests. However, it gets a score of just "Acceptable" in side impact and rear crash protection tests -- when most SUVs in its class receive scores of "Good."

  • "Traction and stability control, 4-wheel ABS brakes, skid plates, Hill Start Control, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for the first two rows are all standard, with the option to add a rearview camera." -- Car Gurus
  • "Ford has loaded the Explorer with standard safety features, to put to rest concerns that have dogged the Explorer since the Firestone Tire rollover scandal of the last decade." -- U.S. News
  • "Lingering concerns exist because of the Explorer-Firestone tire rollover controversy of several years ago. Ford thus has stepped up and given the Explorer a standard AdvanceTrac anti-skid system with class-exclusive Roll Stability Control." -- MSN
