Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2009 Fusion achieves excellent safety scores in federal government crash tests, and was named an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "Top Safety Pick" for achieving the highest possible scores in that agency's tests. The IIHS award, however, applies only to Fusion models with Electronic Stability Control, which is an extra-cost option at every trim level.

The Fusion's available all-wheel drive system also enhances its safety scores. In government testing, the sedan has a four-star rollover rating with front-wheel drive, but a five-star rollover rating when featuring all-wheel drive.

Aside from those options, all safety equipment is standard on every Fusion, including front seat-mounted side, and side-curtain air bags. An advanced Personal Safety System uses sensors to determine the likely severity of a crash and control airbag forced and seatbelt tension to keep occupants more stable in an accident.
