Ford Taurus - What the Auto Press Says
The 2010 Ford Taurus ranks 1 out of 9 Affordable Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 17 published reviews and test drives of the Ford Taurus, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
An entirely new car, the 2010 Ford Taurus is a showcase of inspired design, inside and out. It's comfortable and stylish, with a suite of electronics few cars at its price point can match. The Taurus is a competent performer, but buyers looking for a sporty ride should look at the Taurus SHO.
Ford poured everything it has into the all-new 2010 Taurus, and it shows. Reviewers are almost universally impressed with the new car's taut good looks, its stylish and comfortable cabin, and its near-luxury road manners.
The last Ford Taurus was a sturdy but forgettable car. The new Taurus is anything but. Wearing aggressive bodywork and a contemporary cabin, the new car is one that some buyers will desire on sight. In fact, some reviewers wonder if Ford is making a mistake by taking the Taurus too far upscale. The new car boasts impressive luxury features like the voice-activated SYNC system and available Multi-Contour seats, which subtly change shape to reduce driver fatigue. Why, some wonder, would anyone spend more for a Lincoln MKS?
It offers cavernous space for people and cargo - its rear seat actually measures larger than that of the old Ford Crown Victoria in every direction. Yet reviewers say it's an easy car to drive, handles predictably and accelerates easily. It is also one of the few large sedans available with all-wheel drive.
Still, the Taurus is no sport sedan. Sport-minded drivers will want to check out the high-performance Taurus SHO, reviewed separately. Reviewers have compared the SHO, with its twin-turbo engine and sporty tuning, to an Audi or BMW product.
The 2010 Taurus is available in SE, more upscale SEL, near-luxury Limited and high-performance SHO trim levels.

- "Ford's revamped Taurus has a lot going for it. This large sedan is smooth, quiet, refined, and is surprisingly engaging to drive...Overall, this is a fine vehicle from America's blue oval brand." -- Consumer Guide
- "The 2010 Ford Taurus bridges the gap between family sedans and luxury cars. Lower-priced trim levels will be compared to the Honda Accord, Hyundai Azera and Toyota Avalon. The Limited will compete with entry-level luxury sedans like the Hyundai Genesis, Lincoln's MKS and MKZ, and the Nissan Maxima. The SHO is clearly aimed at Chrysler's 300C. Among this crowd, we think pretty highly of the new Taurus." -- Edmunds
- "A thoroughly refined large family sedan embodying the latest in contemporary safety technology. Attractive inside and out. Roomy. Solid. Quiet. Exemplary fit and finish." -- Car and Driver
- "From an engineering and design standpoint, the Taurus is a success. It is stylish, contemporary, and functional. But it will face fierce competition because it is relatively large, relatively heavy, and relatively expensive." -- Fortune
- "I feel sorry for the Ford dealers who still have a 2009 Taurus on the lot. For the price of the dreary Taurus that still reminds us of the ill-fated Five Hundred, you can have a 2010 model, a car whose styling alone makes the wait worthwhile. The Lincoln MKS - which shares its underpinnings with the Taurus and doesn't offer much more by way of comparison - costs a lot more than this new Ford." -- Road and Track
- "The new Taurus may not ignite the marrow in our enthusiast bones, but make no mistake -- it is a very, very good car, and we can see its considerable attributes fitting the bill for a wide swath of consumers." -- Autoblog
Taurus Performance - 8.0 (Very Good)
The 2010 Ford Taurus easily outperforms the car it replaces, with crisp acceleration and predictable, though not particularly athletic, handling. Reviewers like its smooth six-speed automatic transmission - but most point sport-oriented buyers toward the high-performance Taurus SHO, reviewed separately. Read More
Taurus Exterior - 9.0 (Excellent)
The 2010 Ford Taurus is a striking machine, with an unmistakable road presence. The automotive press was raving about the Taurus's looks long before the first reviewer got the chance to drive the car. Long, low and rakishly angled, it wears a body that Autoblog calls a "linebacker in a tailored suit." Read More
Taurus Interior - 9.5 (Excellent)
The passenger cabin of the 2010 Ford Taurus is impressive enough to cause some reviewers to question whether Ford will accidentally lure luxury shoppers away from its Lincoln MKS counterpart toward the less expensive Taurus. Advanced electronics, stylish design and unique touches like available Multi-Contour seats set the Taurus apart from other affordable large cars. Read More
Taurus Safety - 10.0 (Excellent)
The new Taurus has been awarded the "Top Safety Pick" designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety because it earned the highest possible score in each of the Institute's crash tests and carries standard electronic stability control. The federal government has not yet announced crash test scores for the 2010 Taurus. Read More
