Used Car: 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Review

Review Last Updated: 4/23/13

With powerful engines and a civilized ride, the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 is worth considering if you’re looking for a full-size pickup.

The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 is ranked:

When it was new, reviewers said the 2009 Sierra 1500 is a well-rounded truck, with a ride that is comfortable and enough engine power for nearly any task. While reviewers said the base V6 and smallest available V8 are fine for daily driving, most preferred the added power of any of the three larger V8 engines. The 2009 Sierra 1500 was offered with either rear- or four-wheel drive. A two-wheel drive Sierra 1500 with the base V6 achieves 15/20 mpg city/highway, which is average for the class. The Sierra 1500 can tow up to 10,600 pounds when equipped with the 6.0-liter V8.

Reviewers said the Sierra 1500’s cab is well-built with a clean design and upscale materials. Regular cab models seat three people, while extended and crew cab models seat up to six. Reviewers generally found the front seats to offer plenty of comfort and support. Most reviewers agreed that the crew cab is the best choice for carrying back-seat passengers comfortably, but that the back seats in the extended cab are sufficient for most adults for short trips. Like most trucks, the base trim has few notable standard features. Upper trims and option packages added features like power windows, locks and mirrors, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a Bose stereo, navigation, leather seats, front heated and ventilated power-adjustable seats and a backup camera.

Other Trucks to Consider

If you like the Sierra, you may like the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 as well, as the two are mechanically identical. They share most of the same engines that reviewers liked and both have comfortable rides. The Silverado 1500 doesn’t have a luxurious Denali trim like the Sierra 1500, but it does have a better reliability score.

The 2009 Ford F-150 is highly rated and has excellent safety and reliability scores. Additionally, reviewers liked its well-built interior and potent engines that help it achieve one of the highest tow ratings in the class.
