Exterior - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Hummer H2 has attention-getting looks that are largely unchanged in the 2008 update. Car and Driver says "If you can spot the Hummer's exterior styling changes upon first glance, you're more observant than most of us," which is something that will likely please fans of the in-your-face truck.
Cars.com reports "The main styling changes are to the front end, where the grille openings have grown and the Hummer logo has migrated downward from the grille segments to the bumper immediately below," and adds "The formerly black bottom third of the bumper is now finished to match the brushed-metal skid plate, which remains embossed with an H2 logo. The rear bumper received the same treatment below the spare-tire carrier, where the recovery hooks and hitch receiver emerge."
Most reviewers agree that the SUV's exterior styling, adapted from the military Humvees, is a major draw. The Chicago Sun-Times says, "The "big" aspect of the Hummer is really its bread and butter. There's no sleek, sloping aerodynamic profile, no secrets hidden below the skin of an H2. Nothing is subtle. What you see is pretty much what you get: a huge grille, monster bumpers and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels." Of course, the Chicago Sun-Times also notes that, with a Hummer, "what you get is likely exactly what you were looking for."
Though the H2's large size provides the perfect canvas for its rugged looks, its massive dimentions can be a problem. Most reviewers agree that running boards are a must, but even with those, drivers and passengers may have trouble getting in. AutoWeek says "The rounded chrome running boards are an invitation to disaster--if you or your passengers don't make a point of stepping on the square tread part you'll be lying on the ground quicker than you can text message 'wtf?'" Despite the running boards' somewhat treacherous nature, he Chicago Sun-Times still advises, "Unless you belong to one of the Navy's SEAL teams, do not forget to order some type of assist step. It's a long way up and a longer way down without the aid of an interim oasis."
Getting in isn't the only thing that the H2's size makes difficult. Motor Trend reports "Its immense height bars it from many parking garages, and its Sherman-Tank girth renders it practically unusable in the tight confines of the mini-mall and grocery store parking lots in my neighborhood. I still can't believe I navigated as much holiday-shopping traffic as I did without ever swapping insurance cards." Despite those complaints, most reviewers like the super-size H2's looks.
