Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The federal government gives the 2010 H3 a top five-star rating for driver safety and four stars for passenger safety in frontal crash tests. The H3 receives five-star scores for both front- and rear-seat safety in side impact crash tests. But its rollover scores are troubling. The H3 gets a three-star score when most other SUVs receive four stars. The rating means it has a 24 percent risk of rollover in a single vehicle crash.
The insurance industry hasn't yet tested the 2010 H3, but the 2009 model didn't fare too well in its testing. It received ratings of just "Acceptable" in frontal offset and side impact crash tests and the lowest rating of "Poor" in rear crash protection tests.
Standard safety features include Traction Control, a StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control system, OnStar emergency services with a one-year Safe & Sound Service Plan, head curtain side airbags and dual front airbags. Reviewers say poor rear visibility is a serious issue and highly recommend the optional rearview camera, which costs $550.
- "The backup camera, also an option, almost becomes a necessity on the H3, as its already slight rear visibility is further compromised by the hatch-mounted spare tire." -- Car Gurus
- "The bottom line is that the H3, like all its siblings, is one tough customer. That is toughness that will likely save your life and those of your passengers if you're in a major collision. It's one thing to hear about the five-star safety ratings the driver and passenger sides have received from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; it's another to see it in action." -- Autotropolis
- "The seats are comfortable, though outward visibility is compromised for shorter drivers and passengers owing to the H3's high beltline and low-profile window design." -- Edmunds
