Hummer H3T - What the Auto Press Says

Though it can be tough to live with on a daily basis, the H3T is an incredible off-road compact pickup.

The H3T is aimed at buyers who need serious off-road capabilities and don't mind some outsized styling thrown into the mix.  While other compact trucks are better on pavement, none can match the M3T when the pavement ends.  But, most drivers spend the majority of their time on road, where the H3T stumbles, thanks to trucky handling and poor fuel economy. Unless you can relegate the H3T to weekend warrior duty and commute in something else, you may be better served by another compact pickup.  Also, there's one barrier the H3T can't surmount: it's the most expensive truck in its class -- by a lot.

The Toyota Tacoma, for example, is a truck that most reviewers say is easy to live with on a daily basis. A major plus is that in its base form, it costs almost half as much as the H3T. Throw in steady on road performance, a car-like interior and better fuel economy, and the Tacoma is an appealing proposition.  If you want more masculine styling, also consider the Dodge Dakota.  Like the H3T it has an available V8 engine but costs less and is easier to live with.

General Motors recently sold the Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, a Chinese company. While it is unclear what Chinese ownership will mean for Hummer's born-in-the-USA image, it appears that, for the time being, the military-inspired SUVs will soldier on.  In fact, both companies say things should stay the same for a while.  GM will continue to build the H3T at its plant in Shreveport, Louisiana until 2011, and Hummer's dealer network and management team should stay unchanged.

So, if you're looking at an H3T, you can feel secure that the brand will continue, just under different ownership.  One thing that we couldn't determine at press time was 2010 warranty coverage.  While the 2009 H3T comes with GM's five-year/100,000 powertrain warranty, the 2010 models' warranty coverage hasn't been released yet. However, the 2009 and 2010 H3T are virtually identical.  Check with dealers to get full 2010 warranty information, and if you aren't happy with what you hear, see if you can find a 2009 model for better coverage.

The H3T is available as the H3T and the H3T Alpha, which adds a V8 engine. Both are available in Adventure and Luxury trims.

  • "This just might be the ultimate off-road pickup." -- Fort Worth Star-Telegram
  • "The fact that you can slip your quad or a ton of gear in the bed, put a couple of kids in the backseat, and have dual-lockers right out of the box is a big plus in our books." --4-Wheel & Off-Road
  • "Offers impressive off-road ability, a decent on-road demeanor and look-at-me styling. But the list of its faults is even longer. Rival midsize crew-cab pickups offer a better blend of performance, fuel mileage and cargo capacity." -- Edmunds
  • "We think the H3T is poised to make a run at the premium end of the midsize truck segment, and there is no doubt that it will be the one to beat when it comes to trail work." -- Four Wheeler
  • "Despite its perception as a not-too-green-machine, the H3T is really greater than the sum of its parts. If you need an off-road-capable hauler, the H3T deserves a look." -- Left Lane News

H3T Performance - 7.7 (Good)

If you want a comfortable and efficient daily driver, the H3T isn't the best choice.  However, if you want a serious rock crawler, the H3T makes a compelling case for itself. Read More

H3T Exterior - 7.1 (Good)

The H3T looks like a grown-up Tonka Truck, and most reviewers like it that way. Left Lane News calls the look "Hummer-tough, with all the boxy looks and angles that owners of the brand have grown to love." Read More

H3T Interior - 8.0 (Very Good)

The H3T's interior is popular with reviewers, with the materials and seats getting special praise. Jalopnik says, "An extra star for not using chrome plastics. The seats are perfection. With all the legroom in the backseat, it's a nice vehicle for passengers as well. The instrument panel lighting is attractive and easy to read." Read More

H3T Safety - NA

The federal government and the insurance industry have not yet crash tested the Hummer H3T.  However, the very-similar Hummer H3 earned good government crash-test scores. The Hummer H3T comes standard with side curtain airbags for both rows of seats, as well as anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control. Read More

H3T Reliability - NA

Since GM recently sold the Hummer brand, the 2010 H3T's warranty coverage might change. However, according to Hummer, GM will continue to build Hummers at existing Hummer plants through 2011, so the quality of Hummers shouldn't change.  Details of the 2010 warranty haven't been released at press time, but the 2009 Hummer H3T is covered by GM's five-year/100,000 mile powertain warranty. Included is 24/7 roadside assistance for the life of the warranty.  Before purchasing a 2010 Hummer H3T, check with your dealer to see what warranty coverage applies.  Read More
