Honda Accord Hybrid
Overall Score - 8.5 (Very Good)
The Accord Hybrid offers high-performance, good gas mileage and a comfortable interior, but comes at a premium price. You should hurry if you plan to buy one, because Honda is discontinuing the Accord Hybrid after the 2007 model year. If you're in the market for an affordable midsize car, you should also consider the conventional Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry.
Honda has announced that it will cease production on the Honda Accord Hybrid after the 2007 model year, and Car and Driver reports that fewer than 500 were sold in May 2007. Despite American car buyers' lack of interest, most critics think the Accord Hybrid offers a solid blend of performance, comfortable interior and good gas mileage (though not exceptional compared with other hybrids). Automobile Magazine calls it a "car fitted with the full brochure's worth of features" and claims it "scores on its own merits, with the efficient, seamless hybrid drivetrain almost as a bonus."
Reviewers point out that the Accord Hybrid's excellent performance, hefty price tag and good-but-not-great fuel economy skew the usual hybrid value equation. As Car and Driver puts it, "The usual question about hybrids -- 'can you save enough gas to pay back the extra initial cost?' -- doesn't apply here. What would you pay for a darn quick and quiet family car that also gets great mileage?" However, "the numbers just don't add up if you're considering this hybrid purely to save money on gas," Newsday contends. "If, as Honda would prefer, you view the Honda as a cheaper way to get a fast car ... well, this Accord might be for you." IntelliChoice gives the Accord Hybrid a value rating of "excellent," based on a five-year projected cost of ownership compared to others in its class.
