Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The Accent does well in the federal government's front impact crash tests, but the 2008 Accent's safety scores in side testing and insurance industry tests are only moderate.

Crash Tests

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awards the 2009 Accent five out of a possible five stars for the driver and front passenger's protection in front impact tests, four stars for the driver's protection in side impact testing, and three out of five stars for the rear passengers' protection in side impact tests.
  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2009 Accent an "Acceptable" rating for frontal offset tests, but a "Poor" rating, the lowest possible, in side impact tests.

Safety Features

The Accent's comes with anti-lock brakes, front side air bags, and curtain side air bags. Hyundai also has side-impact door beams, front and rear crumple zones and hood-buckling creases on the 2009 Accent to lessen cabin impact during collisions.

  • "Plenty of attractive safety features and equipment." -- Car and Driver
  • "Now in its third generation, the compact car comes standard with six airbags -- which strangely did not prevent last year's model from being rated Poor in side-impact crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety." -- Cars.com
