Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Accent receives top five-star ratings from the government in both driver and passenger protection in a front-end collision. It receives a four-star rating for front passenger protection in a side-impact crash and three stars for rear passenger protection in the same test. The Accent receives a four-star rollover rating, which means that it has only a 12 percent chance of rollover in a single vehicle crash.

The insurance industry has not yet had a chance to test the 2010 Accent, but the 2009 model received a rating of “Acceptable” in front-end crash tests and roof strength tests; it received the lowest possible rating of “Poor” in both side- and rear-impact testing.

Standard safety features are on the sparse side for the base GS Accent, and include six airbags. An anti-lock braking system with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution is optional on the GLS and standard on the SE, but unavailable for the GS.

For more standard safety features, even on the base model, consider the Toyota Yaris. You’ll pay around $2,000 extra, but you’ll get an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist as well as traction control and vehicle stability control all standard. The Yaris also receives better crash test ratings from the government -- five stars across the board -- and from the insurance industry in front and side impact crash tests.

  • "In terms of air-bag count, standard safety equipment is better. You get standard side and head air bags in the Accent. You don't in the Corolla." -- Washington Post
  • "All Accents continue to come equipped with six standard air bags, but ABS is optional and available only on the higher trims. Stability control is not available. Competitors such as the Toyota Yaris have standard stability control for the 2010 model year; ESC is available on the Honda Fit Sport models equipped with the optional navigation system." -- Consumer Reports
