2011 Hyundai Azera Performance

The 2011 Azera gets a performance upgrade over the 2010 model, but is still more comfortable than sporty. Reviewers say it compares well with more sedate large cars like the Toyota Avalon, offering a similar cushioned ride. It won’t match the sportier handling of the Ford Taurus or the V8 power available in the Chrysler 300.

Acceleration and Power

For 2011, the Hyundai Azera gets a new transmission, as well as a bump in power and fuel economy.

Hyundai offers two V6 engines in the Azera. The cheaper of the two, a 3.3-liter V6, is rated at 260 horsepower -- that’s 26 more horsepower than last year’s model. It will easily meet the needs of most drivers. The Azera Limited's larger 3.8-liter V6 offers a more impressive 283 horsepower -- 15 more than last year. Reviewers say the 3.8-liter is a better fit for the car’s weight, and may be worth the added price for many shoppers. Last year’s five-speed automatic transmission is replaced with a six-speed automatic transmission, which can be shifted manually with a tap of the stick.  

According to the EPA, the 3.3-liter Azera nets a city/highway fuel economy of 20/28 mpg. The 3.8-liter model nets 19/27 mpg. The 2010 Azera netted around 17/26 mpg.

Handling and Braking

The 2011 Azera isn’t built for driving enthusiasts. Instead, it’s a comfortable commuter. A few reviewers praise the handling, but most say it is soft, with a floaty ride. There are no sharp handlers among the large car class, but auto writers tend to call the Azera one of the more softly-tuned cars in the group. Its brakes are strong -- so strong that some test drivers have called them grabby.
